Meanwhile, there has been extensive deliberation on whether the precautionary (third) dose of the Covid vaccine for healthcare and frontline workers and citizens over 60 with co-morbidities should be the same as the first two doses and a decision is expected soon, the government said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference, ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava said the government would issue clear recommendations on this before January 10, when the dose of precaution for healthcare and front-line workers and people over 60 with co-morbidities.
“We have an extensive debate (on which vaccine to give as a precautionary dose). We had a series of meetings at NTAGI (National Immunization Technical Advisory Group) yesterday, the day before and today.
“We are deciding which population will need this vaccine which includes frontline workers, healthcare workers and over 60s with co-morbidities. What new vaccines are available and which vaccine can be given in terms of safety and efficacy, ”Bhargava said. .
“So we are analyzing all the data available in terms of which vaccine can be administered … whether it is the same or different. Before January 10, we will have to clear recommendations on this. drugs and NTAGI get together and that decision will be made, ”he said.
According to the “Guidelines for the COVID-19 vaccination of children between 15-18 years old and precautionary dose for healthcare workers and front-line and 60 years + population with co-morbidities” issued by the Ministry of Health, prioritization and the sequencing of the “precautionary dose” for them would be based on the completion of nine months from the date of administration of the second dose, which is 39 weeks.
They will be able to access the precautionary dose vaccination through their existing Co-WIN account, according to the guidelines that go into effect on January 3.
