For people vaccinated against Covid-19 as part of the vaccine rollout in South Africa, replacing a lost card and finding the unique Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) number can be done through a visit to the vaccination site.
South Africans got a glimpse of the country’s digital Covid-19 vaccine certificate. South Africa’s Covid-19 vaccine certificate system briefly appeared online on Tuesday. This sparked a wave of national interest, following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s statement that a digital certificate could be used to “facilitate travel” and “access to establishments and gatherings”.
But the platform, which was throwing several errors when people tried to access their certificates, was not supposed to go live. It is still in the testing phase and “is not yet officially functional in a real environment” according to the Ministry of Health.
The first review of the system, however, revealed a few key details about South Africa’s Covid-19 digital vaccine certificate, which is expected to officially launch on Friday.
The system complies with the directives issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) in August. The certificate, which can be downloaded in PDF format, includes a scannable QR code as proof of vaccination.
Those seeking their certificates will need to provide their identity number – or passport or asylum seeker number – and personal information. The mobile phone number linked to the EVDS registration must also be provided so that a One Time Pin (OTP) – used to access the certificate – can be received.
The 12-digit EVDS number, also known as the vaccination code, is delivered by text message to those who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19. It may also appear on the physical vaccination record – not to be confused with the shorter batch number – which is completed at the vaccination site.
An EVDS number will be required to access the Covid-19 digital vaccine certificate. Those who have lost the SMS and the vaccination card containing the EVDS number will have to turn back.
“[They’ll need] go to the vaccination site with their ID [and] they can check. Once they find your identification number on the system, it will give all the information [like] your full name, where you were vaccinated, [and with] what vaccine, ”health spokesperson Foster Mohale told Business Insider South Africa of replacing a lost vaccination card.
“This will display your complete profile and they will be able to authorize this information [to be copied] on another card. “
Alternatively, for those who have vaccination cards but no EVDS number, the health service recommends calling the Covid-19 hotline on 0800 029 999.
